THEME FOR ERNIE – Henry Grimes’ Bass Solo

Henry Grimes’ bass solo on “Theme For Ernie”, from McCoy Tyner’s 1962 album “Reaching Fourth”, featuring Roy Haynes on drums. Composition by Fred Lacy. This track is almost entirely in 2-feel swing, and to me it serves as one of the best examples of that feel. This is also one of my favorite solos, with a lot of great bass-minded bebop phrases. However, Grimes’ intonation does get a little wild, I thought it better to analyze his intentions and try to intonate that as best I could, instead of playing along with the record this time. So apologies for the iReal accompaniment.
